The Belleek St. Brigid’s Cross is a traditional Irish ornament that typically features a Celtic cross with an image of the saint above it or a dove, often in green enamel, with both symbols of hope and rebirth. Around the cross, elegant cats are often featured in blue enamel. The ornament is complete with a loop for hanging on the Christmas tree or display on a table or mantel. Designer: Belleek. St. Brigid is shown on the front of the cross in her traditional red robes and holding a gold cross to represent her championing of the healing arts within her monastery at Kildare, Ireland. The beautiful Irish countryside is featured in the background. The top arm has an image of a dove with the head turned down to symbolize peace, the very symbol St. Brigid wore on her robes – which housed healing powers. The bottom arm depicts a pair of cats, symbolizing hope and the ancient stories of how cats were believed to bring good luck to those that welcomed them.
On the reverse side of the cross is an image of St. Brigid holding her cross with a dove above it and standing on an Irish harp – her signature tool, the Irish language and script which she revived, Ireland’s national symbol, the shamrock which signifies faith, hope, and love together.
